Clinical Laboratory at Hospital Clínica Bíblica receives ISO 17025 certification

• To obtain certification, the following aspects were evaluated: laboratory assay test, reception and sampling, personnel’s technical competence and quality assurance and efficacy of results.

San José, Costa Rica.  May, 2010. The Clinical Laboratory at Hospital Clínica Bíblica received Accreditation (ECA) ISO 17025:2005 for “Testing and Calibration Laboratories”, becoming the first Hospital owned laboratory in the country to receive accreditation.

In order to receive the certification, the Laboratory was audited in the areas of sample reception, manipulation, highly confidential information dispatch, uncertainty reduction and applied technology. Accreditation applies specifically developed criteria and procedures for the determination of technical competence, credibility, sample validity and appropriateness, calibrations, inspections and certifications.

At present, the Clinical Laboratory has a team of professionals and cutting edge technology to perform all kinds of tests required by modern medicine, with a high level of automation. The information system is connected to a network.

Samples are identified to the patient with a bar code label that contains the record number, identification number, date and time that the sample was taken, avoiding any possible confusion. The laboratory has 13 microbiologists, 11 college graduated technicians and support personnel.

According to Dr. Rodrigo Cruz, Clinical Laboratory Chief, during the year 2010, they have worked towards obtaining excellence and quality, and for that reason, they are have the latest technology, trained personnel and the support of the other departments of the hospital, in order to achieve the goals planned”.

The Clinical Laboratory in Hospital Clínica Bíblica also has external Quality Control Programs from the United Kingdom, United States and France, in all of the Laboratory’s areas where they are evaluated and the results allow making the necessary adjustments in the shortest amount of time.

With a Blood Bank headed by a microbiologist specializing in immunohematology and with specialist technicians in each area, they guarantee the patient’s confidentiality and safety.
