Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy was initially used in the treatment of divers with decompression sickness. Today, HBO is very useful for the treatment of ulcers of different causes and a great variety of medical and surgical conditions.
Currently, this therapy plays an important role in the integral attention plan of a patient, which might also include surgery, antibiotic therapy, physical rehabilitation and others.
Highly qualified doctors, nurses and technicians make up the specialized team of the Hyperbaric Medicine Service of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital. Before the first therapy with HBO, the specialized doctor will meet with the patient in order to inform his personalized plan treatment and answer ay question or doubt that he might have.
In the therapy with hyperbaric oxygen, the whole body is exposed to a pressure higher than the atmospheric and the patient breathes 100% oxygen.
The extra pressure increases the amount of oxygen in blood various times over its normal level. The blood vessels deliver this super-oxygenated blood to the body tissues to help with the healing, fight infection, diminish inflammation (edema), and help in the growth of new blood vessels (capillaries). These benefits cannot be achieved through normal oxygen pressures.
The hyperbaric chambers of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital are monoplace chambers, where the patient is treated individually; he can seat or recline, with only a minimum limitation of movement.
During the treatment; which usually takes two hours approximately, the patient can talk, rest, and listen to music or watch television. The service personnel monitor the patient permanently, because the chamber’s design allows a broad vision of the exterior. A special system of intercommunication allows for a constant communication.
The following conditions are the current indications for therapy with HBO:
- Ulcers and hard-to-heal wounds (diabetic y non-diabetic)
- Sudden deafness
- Retinal artery occlusion
- Compromised grafts and flaps
- Acute burn wounds
- Various soft tissue infections like gas gangrene and necrotizing soft tissue infection
- Decompression sickness
- Gas embolism
- Intercranial abscess
- Refractory chronic osteomyelitis
