Pain Medicine, or Algology, is a subspecialty within the specialty of Anesthesiology. It focuses on the prevention of pain, and the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of people with pain. Some illnesses can cause pain and associated symptoms due to a specific cause such as: postoperative pain or pain associated with a malignant disease; or there may be diseases in which pain is the main problem, like neuropathies or headaches.
Specialists in Pain Medicine employ a comprehensive approach to treat all painful conditions, from pain as a symptom of disease, to pain as a primary disease. The algologist provides multi-level care: prescribing drugs and rehabilitation services, performing procedures for pain relief, as well as counseling to patients and family members.
Comprehensive treatment plans are formulated considering the clinical history, physical examination, laboratory, electrophysiological and imaging studies. Also, the occupational, social and behavioral conditions are evaluated, as well as taking into account the special needs of the oncological and geriatric population.
The goal of the Pain specialist is to provide high quality care to the patient suffering from pain.
