Learn to detect appendix problems

San José, Costa Rica. August, 2015.

AppendixAbdominal pain that begins around the navel could be an urgent call to pay attention to your appendix, which is basically an inflammation caused by an obstruction.

Generally, “among the main symptoms one can find abdominal pain that could get worse when walking, coughing or making sudden movements. Shivers and tremors could also appear, hard stools, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomit,” explained Dr. Merlin Gómez, general physician of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital.

In the case of children, one can suspect it if the child does not play, stays quiet most of the time, feels pain and does not eat. In the senior adults, it is less frequent. However, the person hardly moves and since they are usually constipated, they confuse pain and discomfort, and they do not always have fever and vomit.

According to the symptoms, the physician can clinically detect if it is appendicitis. On the other hand, a blood test will show, frequently, a high count of white blood cells, whilst the imaging studies can also facilitate the diagnosis.

“Anyone can suffer appendicitis, but in children and senior adults it is more difficult to diagnose. With those under two years-old, ultrasound is used, since they cannot express what they are feeling and in the case of senior adults, the same pain does not appear,” commented Dr. Gómez.

The only treatment is surgical. After the surgery, you must avoid using force, since this could cause hernias, be careful with the cleaning of the wound and should there be fever, consult the physician again.

Seek medical assistance if you have abdominal pain in the right-hand lower part of the belly and other symptoms already mentioned. In most cases, the patient will recover quickly form surgery, if the appendix is extracted before it tears, but should this happen, recovery could take longer.
