Phenomenon of population aging

San José, Costa Rica. January, 2016.

Envejecimiento poblacionalIt is currently said that people are dying in lesser numbers and also being born in lesser numbers, making the world population older. This phenomenon is called: population aging phenomenon.

According to Andrés Román, of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital, “this phenomenon is an increase of the older groups who will live in the future in our societies and will be accompanied by a generalized decrease of the population. This process should be considered as an achievement of our societies and not as a great disaster on the point of happening.”

This phenomenon, in the future, could be considered a danger or could offer new opportunities for society, depending on how prepared we are for it. It should be considered a challenge and if well prepared and known in advance, this really could be an opportunity to develop the extension of social cohesion between generations even faster and more widely. But it could also be a risk if we do not take into consideration all the challenges that the aging of the population requires.

The most successful phenomenon that we normally associate with population aging is in reality the increase of life expectancy, particularly in advanced ages. People who reach the ages of 60 or 65 have high possibilities of surviving until much later in life.

The European welfare states came up in the past with innovating ideas in rendering services and providing resources for older people and there is no reason to think that these societies will not be capable of facing successfully the challenges that the aging of the population implies.

Population aging has been a success and we all share the opinion that this success also implies a series of challenges that we must face, such as the issue of pensions or long term care.

Life expectancy in people of advanced age is from 4 to 5 years more than the one during the period of the last 40 years in developed countries. The increase is greater for women than for men.
