San José, Costa Rica. March, 2015.
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, distension, flatulence, rectal bleeding, change in the form or the color of stools, loss of weight, among others, are the most frequent symptoms of colon disease.
According to Dr. Carlos Campos Goussen, specialist in gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital, “benign ailments such as the syndrome of irritable intestine are very frequent, especially in young people with high levels of stress and alteration in their way of eating”.
The best way to prevent these diseases is to maintain healthy life habits such as a high consumption of fruits and vegetables, adequate water intake, moderate exercise, food rich in fiber, low intake of fried foods, avoid food rich in saturated fat, reduce the intake of salt and wash raw food carefully.
According to the specialist in gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy, a healthy diet allows a better defecation pattern, which prevents the colon from being exposed to substances that are potentially harmful. In addition, a good intake of fruits and vegetables, as well as adequate hydration, allows the stools to be softer with which we prevent constipation.
The people who are more exposed to suffering this type of diseases are those that keep bad eating habits and those that have a background of colonic polyps or colorectal cancer in first degree family relatives.
“The way of diagnosing a colonic disease is through the assessment by a specialist in gastroenterology and probably performing a colonoscopy. Sometimes, taking biopsies of the mucous is needed. The specialist analyzes the symptoms and studies the main diagnostics compatible with the patient´s symptoms”, commented Dr. Campos.
