“Any patient who resorts to a diagnostic appointment with a specialist in orthodontics, will possibly hear the recommendation of implementing some kind of treatment. That is, 100% of the population requires it, for one reason or another” said Dr. Alberto González Arrieta, odontologist of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital.
Dental or skeletal issues, not only aesthetic but also functional, for example, crowding, bad dental positions, open bites, deep bites, transverse maxillary collapse, anterior posterior jaw discrepancies and retained dental pieces, usually require the use of braces.
According to the dentist, “there are many types of brackets and techniques and the selection of a particular one depends on the requirements, not only taking into account the patient´s preference, but also the diagnostics and the mechanical need of the orthodontist.”
Each case has its own particularities, which is why the assessment and diagnosis of the specialist in orthodontics is necessary. The specialist will use supplementary examinations such as a panoramic and lateral x-ray of the skull, plaster models and photographs of the patient, to determine the suitable procedure.
“Needing the brackets and not using them could affect the patient in many ways, for example, functional problems may arise that will lead to the development of dysfunctions of the temporal-mandibular joint, irregular and excessive wear of the dental surfaces and periodontal issues, among others”, commented Dr. González.

The duration of the treatment varies between one and a half and 3 years, depending on the patient´s age and the seriousness of the problem.

Once put in place, they present light to moderate pain, their intensity and duration depends on the individual response of each patient and, generally, is limited to the first weeks immediately after having placed them.
With regard to care, there should be special considerations mainly with regard to hygiene, for example, the use of special brushes or special dental floss which allows the guarantee of good hygiene. The other consideration consists in the care of the braces themselves, avoiding hard foods or generating levers that may compromise the integrity of the brackets.
Prevention is the basis of good health. There are different prices and facilities in the market that make the treatment accessible for those who require it.
