Mental Health should be number 1 in the list of priorities

San José, Costa Rica. May, 2015.

Mental healthBased on good mental health, we can develop healthy lifestyles, work in cognitive flexibilities, detect how a specific situation is outside our control and seek help.

According to Dr. Ricardo Millán González, psychiatrist of the Clinica Biblica Hospital, “the essential point is to be aware oneself of these characteristics and one´s capabilities, and establish mental health as a priority, because many times we go through life and never worry about this aspect.”

Each person is susceptible to develop an emotional condition. This has to do with the mixture of this susceptibility with my story and lifestyle, and this will determine the possible development of a disorder.

The lifestyle has a direct influence with keeping good mental health. For example, the consumption of substances such as liquor, tobacco or marijuana are associated with conditions of anxiety or frames of mind.

“For example, it is a myth that marijuana provokes relaxation. There are epidemiological studies that show that people who consume it, have a greater possibility of suffering affective disorders. If I have a pre-disposition and use drugs, my mental health may be bad. A specific susceptibility and the consumption of substances, in this case marijuana, will mean a higher probability of developing a psychotic disorder like schizophrenia” said the psychiatrist.

On the other hand, the process of getting old does not imply a compromise of mental health. However, as a person adds years, one can be exposed to more mental health affectations, more grieving processes, more complicated experiences, a deterioration of one´s cognitive capabilities and all this may impact the mental health of those people.

Frequently in senior adults, depressive moods and anxiety issues are diagnosed, and are mistakenly considered related to the age and do not receive treatment.

Prevention

I should seek prophylactic help when there are people in my family that have suffered these conditions, or when I have been exposed to difficult situations although I have been able to move forward, not only when I am “drowning”.

Bad mental health may lead to diseases like for example emotional manifestations such as anguish, anxiety, among others, or physical, such as gastritis, insomnia, contractures, dermatological problems.

“One must seek help when the situation overcomes my capability of adapting, if I cannot face a specific demand, whether it is day to day work, grieving or extreme situations” said Dr. Millán.

Exercise is essential. Those who exercise regularly are mentally healthier. A person with some type of depression and who has been medicated, will have better results with the practice of exercise.
