Although it is true that birth-control pills are used primarily to prevent a non-desired pregnancy in women in fertile age, they can also be prescribed to those with hormone disorders that suffer from polycystic ovaries syndrome, acne, cysts and hair loss, among other conditions.
According to Dr. Leonardo José García Bermúdez, pharmacist of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital, “contraceptives are sold without a medical prescription; however, it is recommended to have a prior consultation with a physician specialized in gynecology, who will assess the patient fully and decide which is the best treatment option, based on her history, age, the medications she may already take and any other ailment she may suffer from, among other studies he/she may consider necessary, in order to then select which is the one that adjusts better to the patient´s needs.”
Birth-control pills are one of the most effective ways for contraception, since they have an effectiveness over 97%. They act regulating hormone levels in women and are very safe for all those patients who have no ailments that may be increased with their use.
Some women may present liquid retention, gastrointestinal problems, mainly nausea, and headaches. In those cases where the patient presents a cardiovascular disease or any other ailment with a hormone origin, one should be cautious in order to avoid making the condition worse.
And if I forget to take the pill?
It is important to take into account that, if you forgot to take the pill, you must take the forgotten pill and continue with the treatment at the usual time, but its effectiveness will be reduced, so that it is necessary to use additional barrier contraceptives if more than 12 hours have transpired since the omission.
