Reduce the risk of suffering prostate cancer

San José, Costa Rica. December, 2015.

Cáncer de prostataCancer is a disease that is difficult to prevent. What we can do is try to reduce the risk of suffering it.

Due to the month of man, the Clínica Bíblica Hospital, led by Dr. Jenny Rivera, general physician, offers the following recommendations to reduce the risk of suffering from prostate cancer:

  1. Undergo an annual urological control as from 40 years-old for the average risk patient. It should include mainly a rectal examination and a prostatic antigen test. The study can be supplemented with an ultrasound of the urinary tract.
  2. High consumption of vegetables, fruits and legumes can reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  3. Reduce the intake of red meats and foods rich in fats.
  4. Avoid the consumption of alcohol and tobacco.
  5. Exercise regularly.
  6. In your sexual life: avoid having several sexual partners and coital sexual relationships with sex workers, prevent sexual transmission infections and it is recommended that sexual activity should not begin at an early age.
  7. Avoid breathing in places with polluted air, with elements such as cadmium, fertilizers and chemical substances, in the rubber, printing and Paint industries.
  8. Learn or research the family background with regard to prostate cancer. If there is a family background, it is very important to be alert, since the hereditary factor is fundamental in the eventual development of a cancer process.
  9. Have a prostate biopsy done when required: the definitive diagnosis of prostate cancer can only be confirmed taking a tissue sample (biopsy), which will be indicated by the physician who performs the preventive medical check-up in case there is a suspicion of any alteration.

“There is no proven way to fully prevent prostate cancer, but there can be measures that can be taken to reduce your risk of cancer,” concluded Dr. Rivera.
