In the framework of the World Pneumonia Day to be held this Thursday November 12th at the Clínica Bíblica Hospital and other private hospitals of the country, they joined the project “Friendly Hospitals for adult vaccination”, which intends to educate on the importance of vaccines for adults and the diseases that can be prevented with them.

This initiative of the Regional Study Group of Pneumococcal Disease (GREEN), seeks to complete the vaccination scheme in all the adults users of the health centers, based on their conditions of risk and background diseases.

According to Dr. Jorge Cortés Rodríguez, Medical Director of the Clínica Bíblica Hospital, “Adult vaccination is a topic that has been postponed, forgotten and not taken into account with regard to its impact on the prevention of foreseeable diseases and their complications. Thus, our participation in an issue of so much importance, both individual as well as collective, is so forceful and engaged.”

As a control measure, the Costa Rican Association of Internal Medicine will issue an adult vaccination card, which the patients at the participating medical centers may apply for, with the purpose of being able to keep a record of the vaccines they have received.

Among the actions proposed for the hospitals are included: a commitment declaration, training for the staff, the adoption of a vaccine card for adults, the development of clear and concise information for the patients.

In addition, the national and international vaccination guidelines should be applied and others developed for in and out-patients, as well as measuring the impact of these measures.

“When our society understands that the prevention and promotion of health is the first and fundamental step to have an adequate quality of life, we will achieve the greatest advance of our times,” said Dr. Cortés.
